In the case of OpenType Variable Fonts I've never seen any irregularities that were very noticeable at all before. But the same fonts work normally in other applications. Some of the issues I've been seeing with type will vary from one type family to the next. There are enough complaints about crash issues with the Find-Replace function over in the CorelDRAW 2021 user forum that there is little doubt over it being a bug. On the positive side, CorelDRAW 2021 definitely launches much faster than CDR 2020. Just another reason for me to keep CDR 2018 installed on the same machine. Most of the time I've tried using it the function has totally crashed CorelDRAW 2021, bad enough that I had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up Task Manager and force-quit the application. The biggest issue I've seen so far with CorelDRAW 2021 is its new Find Objects function. Given Corel's track record as of late I'm not as hopeful for updates from their end.

Hopefully Zetafonts will issue an update on their end. The OTF VARs are not 100% quirk-free in Illustrator, but the issues are noticeably worse in CorelDRAW. Zero problems with the standard OTFs btw.

Yesterday bought a new type super family called Heading Now that was on sale (160 OTFs plus two OTF VAR files) the variable fonts "render" more normally in Illustrator whereas the same OTF VAR instances in CDR 2021 look more crooked, wiggly, glitchy, etc. Plus, I think the OTF Variable Font "engine" in CorelDRAW 2021 is a bit buggy. But others just aren't available unless you uninstall either the upright or italic companion. Some fonts can be accessed by clicking the Italic button on the toolbar. I think the root cause is how CorelDRAW and its font manager treat upright versus italic fonts. Some font files don't show up in the font menu. Draw is multipaged, does things as Indesign without needing another program.I'm still seeing the same font handling issues that were present in CDR 2020. There are some specific features that help too, like the contour tools and power clip. So with the deadline rich environment of a sign shop or apparel shop, productivity counts and Draw wins. But from what I gather those ambidextrous in both find CorelDraw 3x faster for common things. This is mostly as I am more familiar with the shortcuts. I am 20x faster in Corel than Illustrator. Draw has document based color management and is good at it. Lot's of shops geared to producing something physical may prefer Corel, (like sign shops.) The 150 foot canvas size makes large scale easier. I can leave Draw open for weeks until I have to reboot. Doesn't crash here anymore than Illustrator. If its a big sign or something, the tiny canvas size limit in Illustrator means you have to scale. The anchor point tools are five fold, (add point tool, subtract point tool, point tool, direct select, select,) vs Draw's all in one tool. I sometimes think Illustrator users all have stockholm syndrome. Some svg programs then use groups to simulate layers and it all comes into Illustrator or Draw as nested groups.įunny, when I work in Illustrator, it feels like a steamy pile.

I don't think the designers nested them but rather it is some thing to do with the fact that there are really no layers in svg, just groups. SVG files seem to sometimes come in very nested. It is useful other times when you might have created such nested groups for construction ease but are now done with them. Mostly it is useful when receiving artwork you have to deconstruct for some reason that has many of these nested groups. Think of it as "Total Ungroup." There might be some script out there that does it in Illustrator, I haven't looked that hard. If it there were sub groups with more nesting it might be more. If it was nested twenty times, you would have to ungroup it twenty times. Ungroup all ungroups nested groups so that are no groups left.Ĭtrl+Shift+G in Illustrator would ungroup one level of such a nested group.
